Crankies are storytelling devices used in puppetry. A scroll unrolls, revealing a journey, a folk tale, a song. They are often accompanied by live music and shadow puppets. You can see a few of my performance crankies on the Puppetry page.
The crankies on this page are meant to go home with you and sit on a shelf as a piece of art. They tell small stories of gardens, kitchens, the ordinary magic of everyday life. They are held by a birch wood box, and painted on a roll of muslin, with watercolor, colored pencil and sharpie.
